Scripture Basis: Matthew 5:43-48
Memory Verse: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.(Matthew 5:44-45)
A few words on the memory verse:
It doesn’t matter how well you follow the rules if you don’t treat people right. Be merciful to all. Be loving to all. Be kind to all.
As believers, our stamp of approval is shown in how we treat one another (see John 13:34-35). It’s not easy… Not at all. Jesus went to the ultimate extreme (i.e. Death) to demonstrate His love to a sin-ravaged world. This shows us two things:
-1- We can never measure up to the example Christ has shown; but
-2- Because of the great example Christ has provided, we are compelled to love from the depths of our innermost being.
It is impossible to accomplish this task within our own will and in our own efforts. But thank God for the Holy Spirit, who leads us in all wisdom and understanding and strengthens us to know and do the will of our heavenly Father. It is God’s will that we love…
After all, it’s His love and kindness that draws us to Him and it was His love and kindness that made salvation possible throughout Christ Jesus. A person may refuse Christ based on our words alone, but who knows how much a simple act of love and kindness may cause brokenness within a hardened heart, making that person open to receive eternal life through Christ Jesus?
