In today’s world, we are bombarded with information about how to live a long life. These topics range from eating healthy to maintaining regular physical activity to avoiding some activities while engaging in others. The only thing about this information is that it changes all the time. One year, eggs are bad, the next year they’re good. One year certain exercises are found to beneficial, the next year, not so much.
As humans, we are prone to error. However, many people are willing to follow the advice of fallible man while making a conscious effort to ignore the advice of the infallible Creator, our God who is in Heaven, Jehovah. He has given us “all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:3) – and therein lies the problem: godliness. Most men would follow God’s advice on how to live a long life if they could continue to do those things that please the flesh (see Galatians 5:19-21).
Over the next couple of days, we’ll be taking an in-depth look at Psalm 34:12-16 to see what the Bible says about how to live a long life. Here’s a brief overview of the topics we’ll discuss:
1. A Reason to live a long life (34:12)
2. Practicing Good Speech (34:13)
3. The Benefit of Departing from Evil (34:14a)
4. The Pursuit of Peace (34:14b)
