Don’t Fall Away

“As for what was sown on thin (rocky) soil, this is he who hears the Word and at once welcomes and accepts it with joy; yet it has no real root in him, but is temporary (inconstant, [a]lasts but a little while); and when affliction or trouble or persecution comes on account of the Word, at once he is caused to stumble [he is repelled and begins to distrust and desert Him Whom he ought to trust and obey] and he falls away.” (Matthew 13:20-21)

We live in an age where the Word of God is readily available at any given time or any given place. Yet, there remains a questions: Are we listening and retaining the Word that we hear? How can we know if we are retaining the Word of God? If we have received the Word within our hearts, then we have grasped, understood, and allowed the Word of God to take root in our hearts.

The only way we can be sure that have retained the Word is for us to experience the fires of tribulation, affliction, and/or persecution. The way respond to these trials indicates whether we have retained the word of God. Sometimes, when we experience hardships, we respond with doubt and unbelief. We question God: “Where are You, Lord?” “Why have you allowed this?” Sometimes we become offended with God. This response does not show that we have retain the Word. Sadly, some walk away from God concluding that He is not trustworthy or faithful to His Word. God forbid that we should think such things!

Let us study the Word of God and learn to apply it so that we do not fall away in unbelief as some have done. Remember His Word. Respond correctly: “He promised to never leave me or forsake me,” “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but He promised to deliver me from them all,” “This will work together for my good as long as I continue to love and trust Him and seek His will for my life,” and “He told me to endure hardships as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” You can make it. You can pass this test. All things are possible to him who believes and You can accomplish all things through Jesus.
